Salzburg is a city worth visiting. It is world-renowned for its beauty and history. The city has a rich cultural heritage and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I think many people put this city on their bucket list. You will not regret visiting here and will have a memorable experience.
Hello traveller,
Salzburg is one of my bucket list. I have long wanted to visit this famous city. I saw on the internet how beautiful Salzburg is. The stories I’ve heard from friends who have visited this city are also impressive.
The opportunity to visit Salzburg happened in 2022. At that time, I was in my late first trimester of pregnancy. So, the trip I can call it a babymoon.
My eldest son was on autumn break for two weeks. It was the perfect time to go on holiday to Austria and visit the city. I though the change from summer to autumn season would bring more colour, atmosphere and beautiful scenery to the town.
Salzburg in Austria
Salzburg is a city in Austria. It is the fourth-largest city in this country. The city borders Germany to the south, bordering Bavaria to be precise. There is a direct train from Munich to Salzburg.
If you are in the city, you will notice that as far as the eye can see, Salzburg is surrounded by hills and mountains. The famous Alps is located to the south of the city. The Salzach river flows through the city. It is beautiful.
Is Salzburg Worth Visiting?
There are several things associated with Salzburg. I mean, when someone mentions Salzburg, people usually remember or think about well-known names or places. As for Salzburg, it is known for..
- Mozart
- Mozart’s hometown
- A film: The Sound of Music
- Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Park
- The nearby pretty town, Hallstatt
Salzburg is a city worth visiting. The city has many things to offer. If you really want to explore and enjoy the city or if you want to experience music, opera, history, and nature, you can get it all here.
I like the old town center. The city preserves its old baroque town center. I could imagine walking in the past as I went there. The facades of the local shops and cafes seem to match the atmosphere of the city.
If only my family and I had more time in Salzburg, we would like to visit museums and the castle. There is a children museum where my friend works. She suggested us visit it because a lot of tourists and locals come to the museum. The children and their parents enjoy the museum very much.
I was invited to wander up the hill by my friend. The hiking route was not difficult for me, who was pregnant and not wearing special wander shoes. The journey was exciting. I finally reached the top of the hill and could see the beautiful city of Salzburg from above.
What to Do?
Feeling confused or do not have ideas about what to do?
The first option, go to a tourist information office. The officer will give you recommendations of places to visit and events to enjoy. Another alternative option I can suggest to you is to join a free walking tour around Salzburg. The tour leader usually gives the participant many tips and hints about what the locals do and eat.
How Many Days of Visiting Salzburg is enough?
In my opinion, three days and two nights in town would be enough. Please note that this duration of stay is optimised for exploring Salzburg only. The duration does not include travelling to other locations outside of Salzburg. You can add extra days to your stay to do day trips, such as visiting Hallstatt or the Eagle’s Nest.
Visiting Salzburg is enjoyable at any time of the year. However, travelling in summer, when the daylight hours are longer, would be more satisfying as we can walk around and explore the places of interest at a slow and leisurely pace. On the other hand, travelling in winter, where it gets dark faster and colder, would be nice if we add extra days.
Some of the interesting locations to visit in the hometown of one of the famous classical musicians include:
- Mozart’s birth house
- Getreidegasse, a shopping street
- Schloss Mirabell Gardens
- Old Town
- Schloss Leopoldskron
- Children Museum
- Hohensalzburg Fortress
- Steingasse, the oldest street in Salzburg
My family and I stayed only for three days two nights. It included one day trip to Hallstatt. It turned out to be insufficient because we could not explore much.
Hopefully, we still have the fortune to visit Salzburg in the future. We would like to experience more and have good time in Salzburg.
Happy travelling,
Amelia
