Holiday in Germany

Do you know that there are many holiday in Germany?

Lower Saxony is the name of the German Federal State where I live. It has more than 30 days of school holiday in a year. There are also public holidays in which most of the people in the state are free from work. I will explain what kind of holiday they are.

Hello traveller,

Since my husband and I are working in Germany, we have a new habit which relates to holidays. We usually plan the holiday at the beginning of the year. Although for us is something new, this kind of habit is actually normal if you live in Germany.

We need to plan the holiday because the company, especially our team leader, needs to know the plan for our leave. So that, the project of the company or the team will not be affected by the absence of the workers. I think this happens not only in Germany, right?

So, what are the holidays in Germany?

Public Holiday in Germany

The holiday you will get while you live in Germany actually depends on the federal state you stay. For example, I live in Lower Saxony. Some days are public holidays in other states but not in this state.

We will have public holidays on:

School Holiday in Germany

Other than the public holidays, there are school holidays. Almost every 3-4 months there are school holidays. Can you believe it? Although my son loves to go to school, he always waits for the upcoming holiday.

As parents, my husband and I try to manage our yearly holiday to match the school holiday. We need to set a strategy so that our 30 annual leaves can be used for family holidays with our son.

So, the school holidays in Germany are:

  • New Year in the first week of January
  • Winter Holiday at the end of January or early February
  • Eastern in March or April
  • Summer holiday in July-August or August-September
  • Autumn holiday at the end of October
  • Christmas holiday at the end of December

Can you guess how many days are these holidays overall?

I can only say that in the summer holidays of 2023, there are about 40 days. So, I think the school holiday may take more than 60 days.

Do you find it interesting or not with so many holidays for the children?

How many holidays do you have in your country?

Happy travelling,

Amelia
