Family Travelling with Railjet in Austria

Travelling with Railjet in Austria is a good experience for my family. The train has a special carriage that offers a family area.

During a family trip in Austria in 2022, I chose the train as our main mode of transport. The reason was that I was pregnant at that time, so I needed comfortable and fast transport to reach the destination city. Similar to Germany, Austria has regional trains and express trains. Of course, the fast type of train to fulfill my reason was the express train.

The Austrian railway company is called ÖBB. The train that was our choice of transport while in Austria was the Railjet. This train is a type of long-distance train that serves passengers at high speeds.

Whar are the facilities and benefits of travelling by this train based on our family’s experience?

Family Travelling with Railjet

There are two types of Railjet trains. When I looked at the timetable for the first time, I was confused as there were two different Railjet codes on the timetable. It turns out that RJ is the code for Railjet while RJX is the code for Railjet Xpress. The difference between the two is that the journey duration served by RJX is faster than RJ. According to ÖBB’s official website, RJX for example offers the fastest connection for the Vienna – Salzburg route.

The maroon and black coloured train has a luxurious feel. Once inside the train, you can already feel the comfort. The floor is clean. The seats are soft and clean. The table in the four-person seating area is also clean. In addition, there are power sockets for recharging electricity and Wifi facilities.

There is also ample space for luggage above the seats. Large suitcases can be placed in the luggage space between the passenger seats.

For passengers travelling with children, Railjet has special carriages. In these carriages, there is a special area designated for families. The name of this area is the family zone.

What does it look like?

Family Zone

When travelling with children, I prefer to book seats. If it is possible, I book seats in family zone. The express train in Germany and Austria offers this kind of facility in one of their carriages. The reservation cost us extra fee. Normally, there is special price for family reservation.

Based on my experience, I could pick myself the seats in the Railjet during the buying process of the train ticket. We can search family zone and find the perfect seats for our family.

We were lucky because we could book a very nice seats location during our trip. Our seats was located beside the children movie zone. So, my son sat comfortably during the train journey watching a children movie. He did not worry because my husband and I sat beside him.

Another thing I like about the family zone is the table in the four seating. On the table, there was a game. As my son was boring with the movie, we could entertain him with the play. It was fun.

The family zone in the Railjet was nice. My son enjoyed the movie and played the game on the table with happiness. The train journey with Railjet was another experience for him.

We, as the parents, also enjoyed the journey too. The child and the parents were both happy.
