A Guide to Visiting Hannover From a Local

Do you need a guide to visiting Hannover from a local?

Do you want to know why you should visit Hannover?

Hello traveller,

I have lived in Hannover for more than seven years in 2025. Recently, I realised that I had not written many articles about this city. I tended to write my travelling trips to other cities or countries.

Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony, a federal state in northern part of Germany. The city is often overshadowed by more popular German destinations like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg. However, this charming city is a hidden gem that offers a rich history, vibrant culture, beautiful parks, and a thriving food scene.

Whether you are a history buff, nature lover, or foodie, Hannover has something special to offer. I will give you a guide to visiting Hannover from a local and let you imagine the beauty of Hannover.

Why Visit Hannover?

Hannover may not always make it to the top of every traveler’s list, but once you visit, you’ll quickly realise what makes it so appealing. The city is a perfect blend of old European city and modern innovation. It is known for its beautiful famous gardens, impressive museums, and unique landmarks, as well as being the site of international trade and industry fairs.

Visiting Herrenhauser Garden

One of the main attractions in Hannover is the Herrenhausen Garden. This large Hannover famous garden is a must-visit for nature lovers and anyone looking to relax in a serene setting. This Baroque-style garden is a vast complex of beautifully manicured lawns, fountains, and intricate flower beds.

The garden complex consists of several gardens located close to each other. The Great Garden (Grosser Garten) is the most famous part, with its symmetrical design, neatly clipped plants and trees, as well as magnificent fountains.

In Berg Garden, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of plants in a more natural setting than in the Great Garden. It is located opposite the Great Garden and next to the Hannover Aquarium. George Garten located beside the Great Garden is a favourite location for jogging and exercise in all seasons.

These gardens are the perfect place to stroll around, enjoy a peaceful afternoon, and take in the stunning beauty of nature. In addition to the gardens, you will find the Herrenhausen Palace and several museums in the area, making it a great place for a full day of exploration.

Explore the Old Town (Altstadt)

Hannover’s Altstadt or Old Town offers a delightful glimpse into the city’s history with its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and quaint squares. Begin your tour at the Marktkirche, a striking red-brick church that dates back to the 14th century. From here, wander through the charming streets and visit local shops, cafes, museums, and galleries.

If you are coming around Christmas time, this place is one of Hannover’s Christmas markets. At the market, you can enjoy a variety of Christmas and winter specialities. You can also buy locally made handicrafts.

Don’t miss the Altes Rathaus or the Old Town Hall, a beautiful building with an ornate façade and a lovely square in front. The area is also home to several restaurants and local cafes, where you can relax as well as enjoy some traditional German food and beverages.

Visiting Hannover Zoo in the Zoo Quarter

If you’re traveling with family or just love animals, the Hannover Zoo is a fantastic spot to visit. This well-maintained zoo is home to over 2,000 animals from around the world and offers a unique experience, as many of the exhibits are designed to mimic the natural habitats of the animals. The zoo is divided into several themed areas, such as the Mongolian Steppe, African Savannah, and Australian Outback.

One of the highlights of the zoo is the Zambezi Riverboat, where visitors can take a boat ride through an African-themed landscape, complete with hippos, flamingos, and crocodiles. My son loves the cruise very much. At the exit gate of the zoo, there is a big playing park for children.

Just prepare a whole day to enjoy the zoo!

Check Out the Museum of Lower Saxony

For history enthusiasts, a visit to the Museum of Lower Saxony is a must. Located in the heart of Hannover, this museum showcases the rich cultural history of the region, with exhibits covering everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary art. The museum’s collection spans a wide range of topics, including archaeology, medieval history, and fine art. The museum’s architecture is impressive too, with a beautiful modern design that complements the historical elements of the exhibits.

Enjoy the Maschsee Lake

One of Hannover’s most beloved outdoor spots is Maschsee, a large artificial lake located just south of the city center. The lake is popular for boating, paddleboarding, and relaxing by the water. There are also several walking and cycling paths around the lake, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

During the summer, the lake area is a lively hub, with cafes, beer gardens, and open-air concerts. In winter, you can find running events and other seasonal activities around the lake.

Take in the Views from the Top of The New Town Hall

For breathtaking views of Hannover, head to the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus). This grand building, completed in 1913, offers panoramic views of the city from its dome. You can take an elevator or climb the stairs to the observation deck, where you will be rewarded with a stunning view of the city and surrounding parks.

The building itself is worth admiring too, with its Renaissance-style architecture and beautiful interior. Here you can also see Hannover market from 1800s, after the Second World War, and nowadays. Do not forget to explore the surrounding Maschpark, a peaceful green space perfect for a strolling around with your family.

Best Time to Visit Hannover

The best time to visit Hannover depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. Spring and summer are ideal for enjoying the city’s outdoor attractions, such as Herrenhausen Gardens, Maschsee, and the various parks. The city is particularly beautiful in late spring when the flowers are in full bloom.

Autumn brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a great time to explore the museums and historical sites. Winter can be cold, but the city’s Christmas markets and festive atmosphere make it an enchanting time to visit.

Hannover may not be as well-known as some of Germany’s other cities, but it certainly offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re strolling through beautiful gardens, enjoying the lively atmosphere by the Maschsee Lake, or exploring the Old Town, Hannover has a charm that will win you over.
